The sixth in a series of tutorials in which you can join me in my shop and watch as a knife is made starting from a bar of steel all the way through to the finished knife. If you're a new maker, you should be able to pick up some pointers here. If you just love knives, then you should enjoy this extended "shop visit".

  • Really excellent video series. Much thanks for posting and taping. Tell you the truth, I tend to learn more from watching youtube instructional videos than I do from the professionally made Dvds, which tend to suffer from either poor lighting, crappy audio or dubious information and sometimes all three. They're often criminally overpriced as well.

  • Thanks ritter89 - I hope to finish them in the near future or have my apprentice do it. My spine issues have prevented me from doing much in the shop for quite a while. On the other hand, if I've taught CJ Powell well enough, he should be able to pick up where I left off and get it done for you folks. Take care and God Bless. Wayne

  • Do you know of any kind of jigs that would make this easier?

There is a vid on the bubble jig for flat grinding.

  • That is a 100x harder than it looks. I tried and I couldn't get the same angle every time. How do you do it!?

  • Jake - sorry for the delay in responding - I missed these somehow. The answer is the age old cliche one - practice, practice, practice. Trust me, if you do it enough there will be a day that muscle memory takes over and you'll be amazed at how much you improve over night.

  • Fantastic video! Man I wish I had a setup like that. I'm currently working on a few custom knife concepts and I'm really worried about getting that grind right. All we have right now is a basic angle grinder, and that's much less than ideal. But I do think we may have access to some better machines. We shall see. I really want to do pretty much the same thing you have here...the full flat grind. I really hope I can make it work. Thanks for the video! Loving the series!

  • Sehr eindrucksvoll erklärt.

    Gut gemacht.

  • Sorry to hear about your back(spine issues). We're all praying for you brother! You just rest up and get better, we'll wait. ;) God Bless!
