@spacediva No doubt. Love, peace and chicken grease.

@KrfNYC2 Exactly, we do agree, just saying the same things in a different way. I think "Different Strokes for Different Folks" hits the point fairly well. And it was fun for me doing a little literary analysis, so thanks for sparking the convo. Love and Light ~K

@spacediva I agree that they (Barry and Jill's respective songs and styles) are different. They are apples and oranges. If they were the same I wouldn't prefer one over the other. Of course they are apples and oranges. But if I asked you which fruit you liked better, you may enjoy one more than the other, no? In this case, I prefer Barry. If Jill's method is poetry and Barry's is not...so be it. I like Barry's way of speaking more. Peace.

(cont'd)That being said as far as impact goes, and whether something has an effect on us, Barry has it right in the beginning of his song when he says "Different Strokes for Different folks". Perhaps, KrfNYC2, you have become an English student in order to expand your mind to the ever-increasing intricacies of poetry, spoken word, and prose. If that is your intention, I wish you much Joy and Discovery on your Journey.. Much Love ~K

(cont'd) way than simply explaining she fell in love naively and her heart was broken. Jill's poem is in past tense and uses a wiser eye to examine the joys and mistakes of her past, whereas Barry is speaking his monologue directly to it's subject in the NOW moment(The time-frame which all monologues must take place), and is searching for the words to clearly express his feelings (which in my opinion takes to long to get to the point and for me despite sincerity, has far less impact)
-
(continued) Type the word poem into Google and the first definition that comes up is:
'po·em/ˈpōəm/
Noun: A piece of writing that partakes of the nature of both speech and song, and that is usually rhythmical and metaphorical.'
This is what Ms. Scott has done, she has made use of the mechanics of poetry alliteration, rhythm, and sound, asymmetry, and layered it in with music and song to create textures that express her experience in a richer more contoured

Hi KrfNYC2, some interesting points you bring up are the difference between poetry and monologue. I took a listen to the Barry White tune you posted and in my opinion, as Iconic as Barry is, his is a completely different style, and comparing his 'slowly -breaking-down the-point- of how much he cares monologue' is apples to oranges with Jill's poem, about loss, coming of age, and learning the true meaning of what it is to Love.

@MustLoveCurls Agree to disagree. Peace.

@Msblackcat1993 I never tried to use my "status" as anything. Lord knows I'm not an expert on anything. And you're right; I'm just expressing an opinion. All I know is that I like some things and not others. If you disaree with my taste then so be it. Simple as that. Peace.

@KrfNYC2 someone saying I love you with sencerity would be powerful but I don't think it would be MORE powerful than someone saying it spoken word style...of course this is just my opinion but I think spoken word is creative and witty and someone saying I love you in that way would be flattering to me becuase they went beyond saying it in simple terms...maybe you're just more into old school simple get to the point style music...and there isn't anything wrong with that
