@roosty2145 Interesting you said that... God says he uses the foolish things to confound the wise... if it takes having "low intellect" to find truth, and peace and joy... then so be it... and no I dont think people who r religious "dumb themselves" so they dont have to deal with the world. They see things a different way, their eyes are opened... and naturally, spiritual things make no sense to the carnal. about intellect, God is the one who gives intellect. it's thru him man can do wat they do

I'm glad the guy stood strong in his faith. I'm kinda in the same boat... family don't understand... but two cant walk together except they agree. they don't understand when God is telling you to do something, you need to do it. that's where your peace and joy lies in. not some great job in some large city! I thank God that he gives us an ear to hear what he's saying to us and a heart to understand, even when others dont... God is good.

I believe in the Rapture

I love how they both still clearly love each other and are kind of OK, if not complacent, about totally not understanding each other's choices.

@roosty2145 2nd part: I also don't think he was forcing his beliefs on his family. He seemed to only explain them when asked or pushed, and even when the opinion was one his sister didn't appreciate, he still said she was his sister and he would always love her. He didn't want to accept/affirm her lifestyle choices when asked directly, but it didn't seem like he was browbeating her either. So basically, he did keep his beliefs to himself - she was asking him because she wanted to talk it out.

@roosty2145 But I think he (with no reference to religious people in general) didn't necessarily have a low intellect - I think she said she remembers him as a "smart" person. But I do think he evidently did need some serious guidance and rules for living all of his life - more than many religious people take on - and he found it at The Farm. There are lots of reasons to have trouble coping and they aren't all low IQs. I'm also not trying to discount his faith here. (TBC)

@roosty2145 It would be easier for me to live a worldly way then that of a true believer. I am constantly being molded and dying to myself for a greater calling. One who lives by he's own standing can choose to stand in one place. Some of the most educated atheist became Christians because of their willingness to find the truth instead of just calling Our God bogus. Christianity is the only religion that gives salvation without human sacrifice. We all have to answer one day, this is the truth.

My theory is that a lot of people of low intellect embrace religion because they have a hard time handling the world. It also makes you feel loved and protected even though you don't have a high socioeconomic status. This theory has some evidentiary support. Religious people have been found to have lower average IQs than irreligious people. Though that's not to say that there aren't ANY smart religious people. I don't mean to be mean but we need to call a spade a spade.

Don't feed his narcissism by acting bothered by his beliefs. That's what a narcissist would want. Tell him you love him but to keep his beliefs to himself when he's around you. Sorry for putting this in two comments but I hit the limit. Also, to qualify, I'm not a psychologist and this is just my best educated guess.

Your bro sounds like a a narcissist. You mention that even in high school your bro acted superior. He said he turned to religion when he couldn't understand his bio course. Sounds like that failure gravely injured his sense of superiority so he found another system to embrace to feed his ego. Now, he gets to be superior to all the "heathens" and it's something he can handle.

Thumbs up if you came here after listening to today's This American Life.
