@ExtremePanda007 Native American isn't proper because I was born in America (Technically a Native American.) That's why the argument is around. The proper term I think today is Indigenous Peoples of the Americas.
-
If you call a Chinese person Ethiopian, is that not ignorant? Pretty much the same thing. And the rest of your comment is entirely irrelevant.
-
@ExtremePanda007 Indians, from India are technically Asians. So calling a Native American an Indian isn`t really offensive, depending on what they want to be called. Also people call African Americans, "blacks" which in many ways is a derogatory term.

I guess I was just trying to say that it's ignorant in general to call them Indians because by my understanding, at least, the term derived from, well, ignorance. I could be wrong but I believe the they were originally referred to as Indians cuz Columbus thought he reached India, making the locals Indians. So to STILL refer to them as that, when we know they aren't is just entirely incorrect. Also cuz it confuses me when someone says Indian, cuz idk which they're talking about.
-
So how are Americans (presumably meaning white Americans) re-enforcing the stereotype they are ignorant by calling"Native Americans" Indians, when it is what these same people prefer to be called, and it is what they have always been called? I'm not trying to start an argument either but I can't help but think your original comment was somewhat disingenuous. Indians aren't children or idiots. they don't need our protection, sympathy or mock confusion.
-
I do realize that some of them prefer to be called Indians, but I just don't understand why. Never really made sense to me. And you can whatever you want about my views, but seems to me you're just trying to start an argument, which I'm not here to do.
-
So why do most American Indians, and various Indian advocacy groups (AIM, etc) prefer to be called Indians then? Drop the wanna-be progressive act; I wonder, have you even spoken to an Indian?

I love watching blue scholars videos and seeing knowledge being passed around in the comments. Love how it sparks conversation between the listeners.

do u have The Ceiling Can't Hold Us?
Lol, the whole "Indian" vs "native American" thing is kind of ridiculous. The other day I heard "Indian American" referring to a Native American, and I was just completely and utterly confused. I've always associated "Indian" with people actually from India. The fact that we still refer to Native Americans as Indians is just kinda re-enforcing the stereotype that Americans are ignorant. Idk, it's just something that kinda bothers me, I guess.
