We had someone hide and we took my german shepherd for a walk to test and see how she would react to a stranger jumping out at us. She passed the test with flying colors. Not only did she bark, but she kept going at the stranger keeping my daughter away from the stranger. Very good job. She has a loud deep bark.
This is a good sign, but it could be a law suit waiting to happen. The person jumping out was not threatening. It should not respond like this. It should be alert but should not attack unless it was a threat. Can you call the dog off if it were to attack? This dog needs basic obedience and protection training. The instincts are decent but it needs to be taught how to discern and obey. A dog should try to bite every stranger it sees. Returning to heel it should heel with no immediate threat.

Gotta love the German shepherd, they are natural guardians! They were bred to both herd sheep and guard them from predators like wolves, and even would have to confront the wolves to protect there flock! Combine that with there power, speed, agility, and super intelligence; 3rd smartest dog in the world.. and they are amazing!
