On average, 18 students live on-site in a dorm while they are given instruction in areas including braille, cooking, independent travel, computer access, self-health care and fitness.
On the north edge of Albany, the Orientation Center for the Blind is a free residential rehabilitation program for people with severe visual impairments. Since it opened in the 1950s, the center has been dedicated to helping people develop independent living and pre-vocational skills. Applicants apply for residence through the state. Length of training is based on students' needs and averages six to nine months. The center is run by the California Department of Rehabilitation.
