@JonT Can you tell me how the self clamping jaws are attached to the treadmill mechanism itself?

@pillow105 There are two self clamping jaws. One that keeps you from rolling down the stairs, and the other is attached to the arms to allow you to move up the stairs. They are essentially a fixed flat aluminum plate and an angled aluminum plate on a hinge. The belt passes between the two plates. Gravity keeps the hinged plate in contact with the belt. If the belt tries to oppose the hinged plate, the edge grabs the belt and keeps it from moving. It is essentially a simple ratchet mechanism.
