Don Williams, The gentle Giant is a favorite country artist of mine. I love that syrup in his voice. I only listen to the classic artists like Don. The 21 century performers feature some that are authentic but others are from the north or don't pick as well.

If you go to one of his concerts today, close your eyes and you can be taken back to 1978. The man comes on stage, sits on that same tan chair, strums and sings. His voice is clear and sharp as it was in '78. He captivates his crowd and you would think they passed out lyrics to everyone. as they all sing along. we saw Don a few months back, and will go again the next time in town.

When I lived in Cameroon, Africa, in 1984, Don Williams was on posters everywhere - sometimes next to Bob Marley and Peter Tosh. I shared a ride with the USA Ambassador to Cameroon... he had been bewildered in the same way, and said he found Williams number and called him to tell him about his popularity. His sense was that Don lost interest when he realized all the music was pirated and he'd never see a penny of royalties. Africa was pre-youtube free.

When I first heard this song,I thought the first line said,'when I was a kid a marine used to put me to bed,my dad was 1st division USMC IN the Pacific and a baptist deacon,so I thought every line was sung to me,I was later 3rd Mar.Div.USMC 1969 Vietnam from Alabama...... so I guess... it was for good ole boys like me ... I sang this song to my daughter for almost 2 years every night to put her to sleep... She is almost 7 now and still has a copy of the CD in her CD player next to her bed... Good stuff...
I started listening to Don Williams 15 years back. I am really fascinated in his songs. Hailing from a village in Kerala State of south India, it is really amazing that I became a fan of Don. It shows that his music has reached in a far of place beyond US. Great singer indeed.

I got to see him back in 78/79 round about then he was in his prime days and guess what, he sat right there on that stool and sang his songs. He is one of greatest of the genre.
