Rare footage of Cantor Pierre (Pinchas) Pinchik leading the Mussaf prayer. Live Shavuot synagogue recording accompanied by choir . Due to the sanctity of the holiday there is no music on this recording
@oberkantor1 Rosenblatt was so special! Truly, between kavanah, voice, style, and his compositions one would hope that people would recognize such genius.
@oberkantor1 Because nobody wants to listen to us daven with style, they want to go eat their cholent. they want sing along. they have no zitsfleisch! Plus everyone who does love chazzanus expects everyone to sound like Koussevitsky, instead of unique.
Seriously I cannot understand those who object to word repetition- they are the same ones who don't mind it in the mindless musical drivel of the Yeshiva boys stuff, or for that matter, the really dreklich singing rabbi Carlebach. Some things are not to everyone's taste, fine- but word repetition in the hands of a master is employed for the maximum emotional effect.
The selection begins "Umiphei hataeinu galinu me-artzeinu v'nitrahaknu me-al adamteinu" (Because of our sins we were exiled from our land and taken far from our soil). The repetition of words is part of that cantorial style. Personally, i don't like it.
@oberkantor1 Because their congregations won't let them. If they did it once they would not get a second chance to return. They are all dummied down intentionally by the rabbis.
hermansegal, I don't think you have to be observant "to understand the secret of Shabbos" as long as the family/background/city you come from was observant. Just as you may understand, for example, that adultery is wrong but still cannot overcome the temptation...
The warmth, heart and soul that you feel in Pinchik's pieces are almost certainly because of his background. I have never heard a gentile sing that touching and hearty that you feel as if a knife went through your heart.

@Cantormatis I agree, but I still think that Rosenblatt would pack the shul even in today's day.

What is this? It sounds like he is practicing when he repeats some of the phrases? You sure this was live? You see what I'm saying?
