Shelly Allen, Asst. Economic Development Director, City of Mesa, AZ, in conversation with Amee Godwin, of ISKME, for CompletionMatters.org, Conversations on College Completion

Shelly Allen describes the partnership between the City of Mesa, AZ, Mesa Community College and the Mesa School District to help low income youth be more aware and more successful in completing a postsecondary credential. Data gathered on completion in Mesa show that 50% of students in high school apply to college, yet only 6% complete. The community is focusing on the need for an educated workforce. A professional development pilot program brought together K-12 and community college faculty to align curriculum and shared learning goals. The city's is defining its new role in education in terms of economic development and sustainability through working directly with local business partners, including Boeing, First Solar, and Banner Health, to collaborate the future of the local workforce.

  • Watch out for this hospital - its a non-profit and has to operate on a shoe string budget, Obama Care funding and we know what's up with that. Skimping on everything, hire immigrant doctors trained in underdeveloped countries with sub-standard medical care, so they can help poor people. Look at the doctor’s names. They use unpaid volunteers. Most supplies are imported or re-sterilized devices meant for single use they used on someone else before you. Don't take chances with health care.

  • Occupy Banner! Occupy Banner! We are tired of CEOs making millions while everyday workers are earning the minimum wage. Banner Health is a behemoth that seeks to stretch every single penny from patient care. Peter Fine, CEO, makes thousands $ per hour, millions per year. A very profitable non-profit for CEO Peter. Stop the government handouts to Peter Fine. Research his public IRS tax year 2009, DLN# 93493316013240. Employer ID 45-0233470 Occupy Banner! Occupy Banner!
