  • @BrighterLater0 i think you are right but i think the high E is tunned down to d making the melody line he plays at fate of young felons all easier to play

  • ive just tuned my guitar with electronic tuner. tuned my bass string down to D

put the capo on the 3rd fret and sat down to try and copy anything i could only to realise hes not concert tuned. life is so unfair.

i agree this is the best version out there.

if there was a CD of him doing trad tunes i would snap it up pity

ilistened to the watersons version and it was really good.

being a scot im only accustomed to the more common english folk tunes

  • pardon my ignorance but has he releasrd an album of tradition songs?

  • I write at 11.30pm on Tue 1 Feb. Tomorrow RT and band do their second Festival Hall gig in London and I can't wait

  • @BrighterLater0 You're right: just put my guitar in dropped D like you say and it what he's doing. He does reach up to the 5th fret (8th with capo3) on both the 5th & 6th strings for the G chord, Eg on "Yon FELons all". It gives that lovely rich deep feel, and when you're playing the D chord you can hook your thumb over the bottom string in appropriate places for a moment, to bring it up a tone & drop it back down again. Actually playing it is a different matter! incomparable performance by RT.

  • @murras1331 Just a suggestion. Capo 3rd fret. It looks as if he is playing a D shape on top three strings. Then I think the 6th string is tuned down to D, which gives that nice deep note available for D chords. Why do I think that? Because he seems to be reaching up to the 5th fret (8 without capo) to play a G chord. But then I could be completely wrong :-). Happy experimenting!

  • fantastic-- anyone know the the guitar tuning ?

  • The best version of this old tune I ever heard.

  • Mr Thompson is modest about doing traditional tunes. In one place, I think he said that there are many others who do it much better than he. Really? How can you top this?
