Discretion may be the better part of valor, but it's not the better part of thievery -- especially when a business selling surveillance video is targeted.
Six thieves busted in a glass door at Computer Sights in Fort Lauderdale, rounded up a collection of electronics under repair and then were gone in less than two minutes, according to store owner Todd Myers.
Little did they know -- or perhaps care -- that their every move was recorded by three separate spy cameras, and the entire heist was projected on an LCD screen in the store.
''These guys are brazen idiots,'' Myers said. ``They didn't care that they were on video. When they came in, it looked like an Olympic event, to see how quick they could get in and out.''
The store, located at 2408 N. Federal Hwy., is part computer-repair shop, part surveillance equipment vendor.
A camera mounted on the ceiling in the middle of the store captured the thieves powering through the front door, then collecting their stash.
Myers was at home when the store was hit, but motion sensors activated the cameras inside. An image was sent instantly to Myers' mobile phone, alerting him to the burglary even before the police knew about it.
Cops are working under the theory that the Computers Sights heist and a similar smash-and-grab in Wilton Manors Wednesday may be connected -- possibly by a group responsible for a spate of burglaries.
They hit Radio Shack at roughly the same time, and then led police on a chase through South Florida.
A woman called police after seeing a group of about six men step out of two cars and pull ski masks over their faces, Wilton Manors police spokesman Detective David Jones said.
The caller thought she was going to be robbed, but Jones said the men were targeting a Radio Shack at 80 W. Oakland Park Blvd.
Police arrived and encountered several suspects hauling goods out of the back door and into at least two vehicles, according to police accounts. Cops believe at least six people were involved. Wilton Manors Officer Rick Shawver subdued two men with a Taser, while a third thief was stopped after a foot chase, police said.
The two cars took off, one nearly striking a sergeant. One getaway car fled south on Interstate 95 into Miami-Dade County, where they escaped police, Jones said.
Police have identified the men arrested: Roshad Pearson, 24; Tracy Cross, 23; and Donzell Harvey, 19. Police also charged Cross with an existing warrant for driving with an unlawful license.
Investigators from both Miami-Dade and Broward counties met Wednesday morning to compare notes on the recent string of burglaries.
