Leading British folk musicians Coope Boyes & Simpson provide the music in their unique and moving acapella style with the song "Only Remembered", as we view aspects of the unique exhibition by the University of Oxford's First World War Poetry Digital Archive in the immersive 3D virtual world of Second Life. The exhibition simulates aspects of life in the trenches on the Western Front during the 1914-1918 war and presents work by the "War Poets" of the period.

As visitors explore the simulation, they can listen to the voices of veterans recounting their experiences of the war, view original film footage and photographs from the time, and learn about life on the Western Front, encountering some of the most powerful poetry in English literature by seeing the original manuscripts, turning the pages of the poets' war diaries and letters, and listening to readings.

The video is taken from the TV series "Designing Worlds", a weekly live show covering design and designers in virtual worlds, produced by Prim Perfect magazine and Treet.TV (http://designingworlds.wordpress.com ). The complete show can be seen here: http://bit.ly/a9I3bE

"Only Remembered" (Bonar/Sankey/Tams Voice Publishing) is used by permission and is taken from the album "Private Peaceful The Concert" (No Masters NMCD24, http://www.nomasters.co.uk ) by Coope Boyes & Simpson (http://www.coopeboyesandsimpson.co.uk )

The song - originally a Horatius Bonar / Ira Sankey hymn from the 19th century, arranged by John Tams - also appears in the play "War Horse", adapted by Nick Stafford from the book by Michael Morpurgo.

  • When the TV programme of which this segment is the closing part was planned, Coope Boyes & Simpson were approached - due to their involvement with the revival of First World War songs on their albums, and their concerts at or near the battlefields of the Western Front - asking if they would like to contribute, as their work was felt exceptionally appropriate to complement the poetry. They kindly offered two recordings and the producers chose this one. No "hijacking" whatsoever, IMO.

  • @HabbieGranny Apologies. It was also in The Big Picnic in 1991.

  • There is a song called "Standing in Line" by Coope Boyes & Simpson on the "Private Peaceful" album, perhaps there are lyrics in the album cover?

  • does anyone know the song by 'coope boyes and simpson' which has the lyrics ' standing on the line, waiting to go over' it is on the play 'private peaceful' thanks :)

  • @HabbieGranny Actually it was the 1990 production "The Ship", also by Bill Bryeden with music from John Tams

  • This song has been around since 1886 and featured in the very moving show 'The great Picnic' perfomred in a shipyard in Glasgow about 20 years ago.

  • lol

  • @OliviaRose2009 its not a musical!

  • @spuddy83 same here, my uncle's funeral is next month and its getting played at his since he always asked for it x

  • I sing this every day walking my dog through the fields and the local forest. Rain, snow, sun. Nobody hears it but me and the dog which is probably just as well, but its so beautiful even I couldn't ruin it.

  • These 3 are just brilliant singers, they seem to make it seem like theres music when infact adding music would some how take something away
