The swine flu pandemic has reached a total of 60,000 cases worldwide. With Australia having the 5th highest number of reported H1N1 cases. The state of Victoria having the majority of these. This story from our Melbourne correspondent, Kathryn Shakespear.
Australia is sitting at number 5 on the world list of the highest number of cases of Swine Flu. The United States has the highest number, followed by Mexico, Canada, Chile and Australia.
In the Southern State of Victoria, the number here is the highest in Australia. With 1,509 cases confirmed, what do Melbournians think of the numbers, and are they taking precautions to combat Swine Flu.
[Barrie Sutton, Semi-retired]:
Well I think thats a matter of concern, that Victorias so high.
[Emma Clayton, Property Manager]:
I thought that they would have contained it before it got so bad, and Ive seen a lot of people walk around with masks and stuff, but theres no one that I know thats had it.
[Nura Sheidaee, Student]:
People overreact a bit, cause it is a new thing, every time theres an outbreak its scares people, I think its just a bit overreacting."
[Steve Heath, Sales Manager]:
I think theres quite a lot here in Victoria, but Im not too worried about it, Im not too concerned about it, but it seems to be growing all the time.
[Jack Hajro, Student]:
Dont think itll kill me or anything, I dont think its a real big deal.
So what precautions are Victorians taking to remain safe?
[Michelle Wong, Student]:
Vitamins every morning, like flu vitamins, Vitamin C, orange juice and just keep yourself healthy and just get enough sleep.
[Barrie Sutton, Semi-retired]:
Every year I always have the flu injection, just before winter in order to combat the flu that might be around.
[Emma Clayton, Property Manager]:
If I got a cough, Id go to the doctors pretty quickly, just check me out, make sure Im swine flu free.
[Steve Heath, Sales Manager]:
being more careful about washing my hands if Im in a public toilet, and things like that, if someone sneezes I do try to keep away.
Three Victorians have died from swine flu so far. The Victorian Department of Human Services says that its important to remember that the vast majority of cases are mild illnesses in which many people recover, without any medical treatment.
