This is a quick review of the http://www.cpmfilmtools.com DSLR shoulder shooter kit. I've spent 3 months using this rig on several projects before putting together this review. Over the course of the last year and half I've used quit a number of DSLR rigs before settling on this configuration. There are a few tweaks that still need to be made to this design before I would call it perfect, but for its price range it is a very well made device.

Pros:

Light weight,
Carbon fiber construction,
Solid build quality,
Cage configuration protects camera,
Lifetime warranty,

Cons:

Less configurable then some other rigs,
Shoulder plate needs improvement,
Handle grips need to be better secured,
Lacking top mounting holes for accessories,

Bottom line: This is a great rig for the price range of $500, and it seems every month cpmfilmtools.com upgrades or reconfigures rigs based on user input. In the 3 month time frame I've had this rig to test out, they have address a few issues I've had with my model. The light weight design keeps your rig lighter, but the lack of wish bone type connectors limits otherwise possible configurations that some users might need.

Video was shot on a canon HF S100.
Wireless mic sennheiser.

Rig configuration includes:
Canon 7d, Zoom h4n, Azden SGM-2X, Lilliput Monitor, D|FOCUS fallow focus

  • Thanks for the review! This system looks ridiculous! All that plastic is frightening. Honestly, all the DSLR cages are a joke. The only ones worth getting are the aluminum ones that hug the body and have power ports, but too pricey. Try doing handheld work on that rig for more than a few hours straight and your back will be screaming. The center of gravity is SO far forward. The people engineering many of these kits have likely never been on a film set IMO.

  • @ChrisCDarnell if I shoot with this rig for more then a few hours I hang a counter weight on the shoulder bars and flip the cage over. Then mount my monitor on the top set of rails and shoot with the camera at chest level. That configuration allows me to pull the rig up closer to my chest. The carbon Fiber build allows me to use a smaller counter weight and still gives me the toughness of an aluminum rig.

  • what microphone do you use?

  • @MrLukasDiSparrow I have 5 that I normally switch between depending on the application.

  • Hey where did you get those ball mounts for the monitor and the Zoom H4N?

  • @mfudesi Ram ball.
