SportsJudge Sentences Disgraced NBA Ref to 15 MonthsJudge Sentences Disgraced NBA Ref to 15 MonthsThe Associated PressFormer NBA referee, Tim Donaghy, has been sentenced to 15 months in prison for taking payoffs for inside tips on games. The judge gave him credit for cooperating with investigators, but scolded him for disgracing the sport. (July 29)[Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] ((Brooklyn, NY)) One year and three months behind bars for disgraced N-B-A referee Tim Donaghy (Dawn uh he). He could have been sentenced to much more prison time under federal guidelines, but the judge gave Donaghy credit for his extensive cooperation with investigators. His lawyer was pleased. ((John Lauro, Defense Attorney)) "We're thrilled with the outcome today in court." Donaghy pled guilty last year to taking payoffs from a professional gambler for providing recommendations on how to bet on games, using his inside knowledge of players and teams. He also admitted betting on games where he officiated as referee. A counselor hired by the defense said Donaghy was a pathological gambler, unable to control his impulses to seek thrills through gambling. The father of four is now unemployed and divorced, living on a friend's couch until he reports to prison in September. "Anybody who has dealt with an addictive disease knows the impact of that disease. There's no question in my mind that but for his gambling problem, he would have never done something like this." The "National Basketball Referees Association" called Donaghy a selfish person who forever compromised the game, saying: TAKE FS: "Though we believe no sentence would ever be able to repair or justify the damage caused by this criminal and scoundrel we are glad to finally put this behind us," --- Lamell McMorris, National Basketball Referees Association. Donaghy had alleged more widespread corruption among game officials, but no one else in the N-B-A has been charged in the case. Along with two co-defendants, Donaghy must help pay back just over 200-thousand in restitution to the N-B-A. Ted Shaffrey, The Associated Press, Brooklyn, New York
