Television tends to dumb things down for the laymen. Damn it, we are smart too! Even the Science channel is too shallow. The amount of information in an hour program may be assimilated with much more satisfaction, rigor, and interest by a casual search of any physics text book.

I know they talk to us like we are babies! Why don't they just explain the equations. Some people actually know math other than physicists.

@ SoCalFlya... I agree, all velocity between objects is relative. Velocity is a vector measurement. Every object in the Universe is flying away from Earth with great speed. We on Earth can measure the speed of all objects using elapsed time between positions as always. Even the moon's position changes constantly and is measured by laser reflection off a mirror placed on its surface.

Hey moron, to know the exact speed of anything we would need to have an absolute universal reference point. If the universe is infinite then we can never know. The Earth is moving, the Sun is moving, our galaxy is moving, etc.. How can we know the exact speed of anything then?

By its relation to another object THE ONLY WAY U CAN MEASURE THE SPEED OF ANYTHING ie our orbit around the sun around the north pole axis and away from andromeda using doppler shift what do u want a sign post in the middle of the universe
U DIDNT ANSWER MY QUESTION
DO U SERIOUSLY THINK WE CANNOT CALCULATE THESE SPEEDS ??

Who's arguing that you cannot calculate the speeds between the earth orbiting the sun? I'm telling you that we cannot calculate the speed in relation to the universe. You cannot even grasp this concept. Read Stephan Hawkings' latest book he explains it well.

UR A MORON spped of the ball plus or minus the speed of the train depending which direction the ball is thrown unless the train is travelling at the speed of light then no differance either way
no absolute referance point ???
the sun??
the north south pole axis ???
andromeda ???
how more fuckin absolute do u want ??
so ur telling me we cant accurately calculate the speed of the earth around its axis around the sun and away from andromeda ??? seriously ???
go back to school thats basics

The fact is that we can never know the exact speed of anything, unless we have a static universal reference point. It's not a philosophy its a fact.We can only create reference points relative to our local environment. If we knew exactly the size of the universe and could find let's say the center of it, we could then calculate the exact speed of objects. But since we do not have such an absolute universal reference point we do not know the exact speed of even a ball moving through space on a train
