In order to operate a mat cutter, ultimately you need to know each individual border size in order to se the mat guide properly. As a result, the 4 border sizes you calculate will create the proper size opening or aperture for the art work. Just remember that the mat opening should be 1/2" smaller than the art work going into it. Example: 8x10 artwork needs a 7 1/2" x 9 1/2" opening. This creates a 1/4" extra edge of mat that prevents the artwork from "falling through" the opening.
