actually the age "bar" is being raised higher everyday. A 38yr old competetive trail horse still competing. Horses forty + yrs. With great care and not having to do HARD work for a living as in the past, the sky is the limit. I'm 54 and my "best friend" is 17. I hope to grow old together and die on the same day. We will reach heaven together, for u see there is no heaven without horses.
If you ever have difficluties to keep the weight on him as he ages, I would recommand " One and Only " which I give in a bucket to stay at all time filled. It is additional to their daily ration , it definitely helps keep the weight , picky eaters love it and if they have ulcers , or do not eat their hay , it keeps something in their tummies at all time and something to munch on .... Great looking horse , TB are very special and extremely intelligent , I have quiet a few exracers in my life !
my Tb is 20 and if you dont ride him everyday he will freak out in his stall and throw huge fits and as soon as you walk out of the tack room he is kikin his stall. He is definetly not ready to retire.
smaller breeds, such as ponies, have a tendency to live longer. Welsh ponies and Arabs especially have long life expectancies, reaching ages as high as 33, easily.
