  • The high rates of Irish schizophrenia are probably due to epigenetic alterations caused by the Famine of the 1840's. They are not due to sociological factors or excessive potato consumption as has been hypothesized. The high rates (4% CONSERVATIVE ESTIMATE) are the mark of the Famine. There are Holland China Norway Britain studies addressing the issue variously. But the Irish phenomena- a mother lode of schizophrenia data -has never had the rigorous study it deserves. Please.
