Dr. MJ Bienvenu, a Gallaudet professor with the ASL and Deaf Studies department and linguist, shares a message to the Italian community, with endorsement from Gallaudet University President Dr. T. Alan Hurwitz. Italian Sign Language is a full-fledged, complex language just like American Sign Language, English, Italian, and other languages in the world. American Sign Language and English are used for academic discussion and learning at Gallaudet University, a bilingual university. We give our full support to the Italian Deaf community in their fight in keeping the linguistic status of Italian Sign Language as a language.
