what this means is they went to war with people because they threatened romes allies.

just to add onto this, most of their conquests were spurred by other events.

IE.. The northern african and NW coasts wouldnt have been conquered if king jugurtha of numidia hadn't raided and waged war on roman provinces in old carthage.

the romans wouldn't have taken egypt because they were allies, but through cleopatra and anthony causing the civil war, egypt lost its self governance.

I can understand where you say the romans are conquerors, but they only did it to protect their borders.

In the early days when the romans defeated the Etruscan kings they formed a republic. They remained a democracy with a senate up until they reached caesar who used the wartime panic and fear to gain his imperial power.

The romans were opportunistic, when they took macedon over 3 wars, and Carthage, it was because the greek cities and Syracuse asked them to help. Pergamum was willed to them.their growth was later conquest, but other nations axing them to help

In the early days it wasnt so, the city was alost sacked if it wasnt for the very large treasury they managed to bribe the barbarians away. So by your logic, the Roomans are "Bad" because they knew how to fight and if you say they didnt then youa re as i previously stated A Fucking Bellend. so what if they allways out numbered there foe's it wasnt allways so dude. Go look up the battle of Cannae where Rome lost over 60,000 troops, the cream of politcal and military leadership. By the way carthage had around 40,000 troops and still won. And most of the things you mentioed previously is called strategy...fucking bellend

if the Roman army is considered a horde, then all the other armies to you must simply be peasants with sticks. the roman army was one of the most organized and disciplined army in its time, and thats why he won victories. the gauls had the potential to win in the gaullic campain, but they were disorganized, even though they had superior numbers. Face it, the romans were the superior army, thats why they defeated all of their enemies.
