Scott Joplin requested the "Maple Leaf Rag" be played at his funeral in 1917, but his wife wouldn't allow it. 87 years later, his request was fulfilled; performed by Dan Levinson, John Gill and Vince Giordano

  • I very much believe and just my opinion but i very much believe that a piano: electric, up right even a grand should have been played.....instead. No i dont care for this style of playing....i'm sorry.

  • Well Brian,

The event lasted all day. Thew first 3/4 where in front of the funeral home, not at the grave site. There was a large grand piano up on a stage and differents students, performers and guests where asked to perform. At the closs of the ceremony is when this small bad did a march donwn to the actually grave and played his request. It had been played on the piano several times that day. I think the entire experience was just as it should have been

  • It's actually 80 years late.

  • How do you figure? He died in 1917 and this was performed in 2005.

  • I meant no offense, as gentally as i could i expressed my opinion. I am very happy for Dr. Joplin that he was recognised at all. In fact basically as we type to each other i am redicovering Treemonisha just in time: 2010 is 2 and a half months away Treemonisha is 100 years old in 2010??! It and Dr. Joplin deserve another performance. A celebration/anniversary performance! THANK YOU!

  • Did any of his relatives attend this performance?

  • Oops misstated his death for 1927. And you should put that in the info box.

  • I might seem inappropriate for a funeral.

  • Very nice version! Did any of his relatives attend this performance? I wonder why his widow denied his request.
