The respiratory system provides oxygen to the body's cells, and removes carbon dioxide

Air containing oxygen, enters the body through the nose and mouth, travels through the windpipe, and into the branching airways of the lungs, called bronchi.

Here, through thin-walled sacs covered by capillaries, oxygen passes through the lung tissue and goes into the blood stream, where it locks onto red blood cells.

Further in the bloodstream, the blood cells squeeze through more capillaries.

Here, oxygen unhooks from red blood cells and crosses into other body cells to be used for life-maintaining chemical reactions.

When this process is reversed, carbon dioxide- waste from the chemical reactions enters the blood stream and is ultimately exhaled from the body.

  • good clip, thanks.

  • The tragedy of constant carbon loss through exhaling and the stress it puts on active mammals is a profound challenge to us all. If humans work as a team, we can deal with the tragedy of Constant Carbon Loss more maturely and effectively. Discuss the Constant Carbon Loss challenge with friends and family, so that others won't have to face this devastating fact of life alone!

  • Great video, thanks for the upload :)

However, it shouldn't be called 'Respiration', it should be called 'Inhalation/Exhalation', or 'breathing'. Respiration is the process that takes place in our cells where oxygen and glucose combine to release energy, carbon dioxide and water, it's not the same as breathing.

Just letting you know, because kids almost always think respiration and breathing are the same! (I'm a science teacher :) )
