Within 20 years of the end of the Civil War the United States had emerged from economic ruin and begun its entrance onto the world stage. The 1880s and 1890s saw an explosion of industrialization, discovery, innovation and economic change. Wealth brought social change and the opportunity for the exploration of new themes in American fine and decorative arts and architecture, nowhere better expressed than in Newport, Rhode Island. As this podcast documents, Americans today can revisit this era at the properties of the Preservation Society of Newport County. This podcast is an excerpt from a 48 minute documentary available online at http://stores.newportmansions.org or at any Newport Mansions Store.

  • This is the most beautiful place to vacation. The mansions are unreal!! I've seen all of these. The closest I will probably ever get to Europe, as I am terrified to fly & sail! That's alright...I love being able to drive five hours on "terra firma" to Europe & these gorgeous palaces. I LOVE the Gilded Age. Too bad income tax had to come & ruin EVERYONE'S fun. :)

  • I've been there.

  • I grew up in newport, and I can tell you that some of what you see in marble house is really wood painted to look like marble.

  • @vickiehill1 I used to live in Newport! I have also visited all the mansions that are open to the public. Newport is my favorite place to be, all of my fondest memories are there! If I could go back in time I would choose to visit Newport in the Gilded Age for sure! Love that time period! Im glad to see that someone else loves it like me!

  • It is a shame this is a museum now :( I feel it is a waste of real estate !

  • I've been there. Love the breakers & marble house. Got to see the golden room.
