@OmteZero ...then they realize that you usually start with a goofy looking wooden mockup of a sword and get very disappointed. The generalist stuff isn't made up, but it probably does play a smaller role than the perceived glamour of the weapon when it comes right down to it.
Personally, I think starting with wrestling is a better idea as it teaches people the basics in an accessible manner. There's no point swinging swords when you can't grasp structure and feeling.
@halfassedfart Disagree. Most HEMA guys start with the sword because it is a more glamorous weapon full stop. That "generalist" stuff is just made up to justify why you guys jump the gun and start with the sword instead of the stick and the spear.
@OmteZero The idea behind starting with the sword is that it's a generalist weapon. The principles can be adapted and applied to most other weapons in some form or another, price really doesn't have much to do with it. :)
And no, you can't brag about it because it was a weapon of war that was a bloody pain to carry in a civilian context. You'd look like a bloody git if you had a spear slung over your back while going out for drinks with your buddies.
Real good example of how dangerous the spear can be. There's too much emphasis on the sword in EMA and WMA. The Staff and the Spear should be learned first before going on to the sword but no...cause you cant brag about a staff weapon like you can with a flash expensive sword!
I just had a short spear custom made for my local field... it's lots of fun! It's neat to see you guys working with it. I'm also curious at the lack of thrusts... a constraint of the match perhaps?
We are also studying the spear here in Sweden. I noticed that you are not using sliding thrusts very much. Is there any particular reason for that, or was it a set rule for the sparring practice?
I would love to discuss more about spear work with you. :)
@halfassedfart You got me with the wrestling.
