  • OK, Milnes did not have a perfect technique. (Who did, or has?) But having seen his Iago in person, I can attest to the size and power of his voice and his vibrant stage presence. Yes, he let his "placement" go too far back, so his vowels became thick and gooey. Even so, they retained their resonance until his vocal crisis, as did his top. And given what we have for Verdi baritones nowadays, would we not welcome a singer of Milnes' attributes today? Lord knows I would --

  • Where does all this sniping come from? For over twenty years Milnes was among the very best baritones. I heard him both before and after his vocal cord problems. At all times he sang as well or better than anyone. Tell me, WHO sings this well today? I want to hear them!

  • @narfitowa IF you were a trained singer (and I have had a 32 year career as a Verdi baritone) then you would not sprout such nonsense. Whoever in the singing world has heard of "blade" other than yourself? Here is a baritone who has EFFORTLESS top notes and can even sing a high C! Here is a perfect example of appoggio singing and someone in whom you could not hear where his chest, passagio and head voice began and who also had BRILLIANT high notes! Make a better reputation yourself.

  • When you have personally stood on stage and performed (and Milnes has done so in practically every house of note in the world) then perhaps you are qualified to criticize. Milnes had a technique second to NONE and I have modeled the production of my own vowels in the upper head register on his and found it gave me effortless top notes as well. His stage presence even in concert is electrifying and in a production even more so. I have always admired him as a consummate artiste. BRAVO Milnes!

  • Simply terrible. How is it possible for a pro to sing vowels that go "aaaouuoooouu"...

  • I personally think this performance is beautiful. I admire Sherrill Milnes greatly, and as I've said many times I don't understand some of the negativity on here, especially when those who criticise make banal statements and make out their opinions is fact. Yes, he has sung flat before as has a lot of Verdi baritones and I have to hear anybody who sings perfectly all the time, but there are so many things that I love about him. How about his amazing top notes, his legato and thrilling presence?

  • powerfull!!!!

    Bravo Milnes!!!

  • I agree 100% w/U "Operaddict." He sure wanted 2B Lenny alright. Even in this video, I'm not gettin' anything but an imitation of Warren! Pretty good on some areas. He got the sound right:) But Lenny's high notes were SO much easier than this!

  • Bravo! It's pleasure to listen to him! Not often you can hear so nice performance and great voice!

  • @rovingdesertfox I must have meant something else then! Sorry I have never been able to stand Milnes...

  • @mozzrt The times you cite he's using head voice. And there is no 7:05.
