I think the reason they decided against i was that, even though it is really wonderful and arguably better than the other version, in the end it is not in the "true" Jolson style. It's so much smoother, wit more legato, that it almost resembles how Dean Martin or Crosby would sing it. I love it, tho.
I LOVE this version. It's so incredibly moving. I sometimes wonder, had I been in charge of things, if I wouldn't have gone with this one for the movie. Or maybe a combo of both. Both were outstanding in their own ways. I'm guessing Morris Stoloff wasn't completely satisfied with his arrangement here, so wanted a redo. Still, I loved it! Thanks so much, Pat, for sharing this amazing outtake! Wonderful work on the vid, too! Such great, rare pics of the master at work! :)
