In March 2007 I was sent on assignment with three Best Friends staffers to Moab Utah to photograph a group of parrot lovers that free-fly their birds.

They told me I would be treated to the opportunity of photographing macaws and other parrots flying over the red rocks of Moab. As a long-time nature photographer, the concept of colorful parrots gracefully flying over such a spectacular landscape sounded like a dream. And just as promised, there they were in all their glory. The whole scene was beautiful and fun to watch.

But the birds were not only beautiful; they were real characters too and showed off in whimsical ways I didnt quite expect. At times they were just plain silly - landing on everyones head, pulling on hats, untying shoestrings, wanting peanuts and sips of water.

It's clear these people truly love their birds and take them out on free-flying sessions to help ensure that they have quality lives. To find out more about safely free-flying parrots, go to: http://www.libertywings.com

  • @chihuahuabulldog The birdtricks people are new at this and don't use the best training techniques. I would avoid them if it were me.
