Colins classic auto dot com (under CARS, PRIVATE COLLECTION) tells the history of this GT40 documenting the original purchase order placed on March 9th, 1966, by 30-year old Mr. David Heerensperger of Spokane, Wa., @ a whopping $18,250, roughly the cost of almost 5 new 1966 Corvette Roadsters! AC was added for $750. Pic of Shelby handing keys over @ Shelby American June '66 without having to fly to England! During the approx. 1200 miles to Spokane, Wa., some "driving awards" were received.

Yea, these were the civilian variation of the Famed GT40.. Once you bought one of these cars, you had to fly all the way to England for a custom seat fitting!! Also, the engines weren't as powerful as the GT40s that actually raced in Le Mans. If I can remember correctly, I believe they were $80,000... Yea, and it was 1966!
-
yes there are race versions that still excist. one sold at barrett jackson about 10 years ago for around $700,000

that's a whole lotta money, imagine how many toasters you could buy with it! I would never leave the house if I had that many toasters! but then die on toast-overdose...
