The Internet address space available under the current protocol, IPv4, will run out real soon, 2011, and the only long term solution is to transition to IPv6 which has sufficient address capacity to give every grain of sand on the planet its own unique Internet address, or something like that.
Only 16% of the total IPv4 address space remained unallocated in early 2008, this situation is critical for the future of the Internet economy because all new users connecting to the Internet, and all businesses that require IP addresses for their growth, will be affected by the change from the current status of ready availability of unallocated IPv4 addresses. @SoftwareExplorer I know. This comment was kind of old, from back when I was just starting out learning about IPv6. Not that I'm an IPv6 expert now or anything, but I have played around with it a bit more and understand it a little better than when I made that comment.

Unless you are using some kind of translation that isn't possible (in either direction). However, you can have both an IPv4 address and an IPv6 address so that you can use both. (That's called dual stack).
SoftwareExplorer 7 months ago
Because of the IPv4 mapped addresses in IPv6... although I'm unclear if that's only on dual-stacked systems or if it's part of IPv6 and can be used in a pure IPv6 environment.

How can you access a v4 address from a v6 address without either dualstacking back to v4 on the latter or with tunneling support in your network archietechture?

If you're on an IPv6 network, you can still access IPv4 addresses. It's the other way around that doesn't work.

...This was awesome...I shall save my soul by switching to iPv6! Bwahahahahahahahahaha!

IPv4 is very close to being "all out" already. While IPv4 and v6 can exist together on the various physical lines that make up the internet, you cannot directly communicate between v4 and v6 - this takes additional centralized hardware. I dont see why we cant just skip over to v6 already - here in norway the infrastructure is mostly in place already afaik and we are the 4th 'largest' country in the world when it comes to IPv6 traffic % of total internet traffic (0.49%)
