IHUM 2008 Final Project
Our thesis is that imitation is the basis of human identity—that is, humans have the potential to be man or machine, depending on whom they interact with. When interacting with humans, or at least beings who display thoughtfulness and emotion, the human assumes his man identity by a show of empathy. When interacting with machines, however, humans assume their machine identity. According to Turing, man generally perceives machines as unthinking, inferior, and of limited programming. Thus, in accord with our idea that humans emulate whom they interact with, humans stoop down to their perceived emotional level of the machine. Humans do not display much feeling since they are interacting with what they believe to be inanimate.
