Yep that's the idea! I have great admiration for shields that work well with archers the overall effectiveness of the combination is huge! It works both ways though. I never abandon my shields, even if it put's me in a high risk place.

@TonySwallow I've been a shield for an archer in the 2nd rank. If you keep them alive they reek havoc across the lines, The archer pops up and fires then ducks down to reload. It's awesome!

Lord Schwalbe, I'd just like to thank you for this excellent post.
I am a young man looking to enter the SCA melee fights, hopefully as a combat archer, and this was a good bit of information. :)

When you have a static battle lines find a couple of archers who have the stones to fight in the second rank, ideally they should be able to lay down a round every 3 seconds and hit a faceplate at 10 yards. You have a heavy to cover them and spot targets for them, this frees them up to shoot. These guys have to be brave though, they will be eliminated post haste!
