Small streams under 'normal conditions' may seem placid and these spots are often chosen for gauging stations. In high flows standing waves can impact on the gauge pool. Accepting the gauge height and gauging the flow, then developing a rating from that, is the best way to go as long as the water level sendor is maintained appropriately.
