@Old545 I was talking about the remarks made by another commentor, not the speaker in the video. I agree, she is an expert, although it's unlikely she's read as many books on economics as I have (scores, including Hume, Malthus, Hobbes, Wealth of Nations, all the Austrians, von Mises, Hayek, Marx, Mills, Menger, Rand, Friedman, Hazlett, Sowell, et. al. and etc... Should you care? No, but you brought it up - you don't know I'm not an expert, so stop making an ass of yourself.
@DaishiGajo All right, so Thomas Paine (sic), a.k.a 'Payne', had some 'unorthodox' views. No, that doesn't make him a socialist, anymore than Thomas Jefferson is 'Simon Legree', because he owned slaves. We need to be more concerned about the 'Pain' who is now in the White House and his ilk, than the idiosyncratic ideas of a brave, and otherwise admirable patriot, who departed some
200 years ago. Instead of 'touring' the proverbial 'forest', it would greatly behoove us to focus on 'the trees'.
@iotbs8 Thomas Paine, the writer of Common Sense, proposed ideas many would find socialist. Does that mean that he, one of the instigators of the Revolution, would be diametrically opposed to what this nation stands for?
Why do you have to lift the debt ceiling again? I still don't get it. If you cannot spend more then you get in (i.e. not add to the deficit) you have to start cutting back in big slices. Neither does this mean automatic default nor does this mean complete disbanding of the military. You pay interest, you pay soldiers. And that's it, some administrative overhead and then the mass slaughter of the federal government begins. I like it. If Obama shows he doesn't care about America, even better.
I don't know what you are talking about iotbs8, and I don't think you do either. The government spending is bnkrpting the US. The politicians have promised more than they can delivery to buy votes (dems and reps). They take as much in taxes as they can, borrow just as much - spend 2x what we can even afford and debase to currency (which screws the poor) keep the spending going. IT IS UNSUSTAINABLE! Do you know what that word means? Dfault now, dfault later... if we have a choice it only gets wrs
Ms. de Rugy is knowledgeable and sincere, but you can't divorce politics from this discussion & still be 'real world'. Too many of the 'principals' in this 'controversy' are NOT sincere. Those with a socialist agenda are diametrically opposed to everything for which this nation stands; others are simply self-serving. Unless (and until) we, the electorate, are able remove enough of these obstacles, who are impersonating public servants, from office, the best of intentions will be frustrated.
No default is possible.

@derekHSmith English might not be her native tongue based on her name and accent.

She is correct and intelligent in her comments, but she should stick to writing, she's a terrible speaker.
