Greg Palaschak has taken time out from combining wheat due to the rain several days ago. Neighbor Tombaughs baled the wheat straw in the section of the field that was harvested before the rain. Now today they stack the bales and kindly clear the path for planting. Greg started planting beans in the wheat stubble with his Deere conservation drill. This is the same drill that he used to plant this winter wheat last fall. The row spacing is 7.5 inches. The goal is to plant the bean rows 3.75 inches from the wheat row. Tombaughs use a Shelbourne stripper header. The Shelbourne stripper header leaves nearly 100% of the straw stalk standing. This saves wear and tear on the combine which otherwise must run all the straw through the combine. Tombaughs have a wide cutter to cut the straw in a second pass through the field. I took some movies of their blue Shelbourne stripper header. I posted them here on YouTube. Video by Doug Palaschak.
