'Ya Mar' is the title of a song popularized by the band Phish. It was originally written by Cyril Ferguson.

As the story goes, bassist Mike Gordon was on vacation in the Caribbean when he heard 'Ya Mar' performed by The Mustangs, a reggae band. Gordon brought home recordings of this song and taught it to the band.

Phish's first documented 'Ya Mar' is 2/27/87 and is played on average once every 10.7 shows.

  • @gotta024 I assume you heard Mike's version with Leo Kottke, my personal favorite.

  • I've been looking for this recording since I hear Mike's interview where he said you just can't get it. Thank you to the moon and back

  • This is good old Bahamian music.

  • wow. this is great.

  • @Deango2 when I make techno beats with my mouth it's always this high hat cymbal. Tsst Tsst Tsst Tsst Tsst Tsst Tsst Tsst

  • awesome as a diehard head..i must say..i think i like this version better.....phish kinda slowed it down...although when mike sometimes gets cheesy and does his thing at the end thats always awesome...but he doesn't always do it

  • Actually the story is that Gordon heard this as a child while in the pool at a resort and could feel the bass through the water. It made him pick up the bass as an instrument. It was many years later he dug out the cassette and taught it to Phish.

  • I've been trying to find this for at least 5 years now. Thank you!!!!

  • Thanks for posting. This sounds an awful lot like Cyril Ferguson's recording, though...
