Jorge G. Castaneda: Mexico's Future and Its Relationship with the U.S.

Former Foreign Minister, Mexico; Professor of Politics and Latin American and Caribbean Studies, NYU; Author, Manana Forever?

Mariano-Florentino Cuellar, Professor of Law and Political Science, Stanford University - Moderator

Mexico's future is most certainly dependent on its relationship with the United States. In fact, Mexico ranks third in total trade with the United States behind Canada and China. But in the midst of this positive relationship, there is also a drug cartel war that has claimed the lives of more than 34,000 Mexicans and over 100 Americans in the past four and a half years. Ongoing issues of immigration and border control are also high on the list of mutual concerns. Mexico's foreign minister under former President Vicente Fox, Castaneda will offer a broad perspective on the future of the Mexican people and on relations between our two countries. Come hear from one of Mexico's most profound social thinkers.

  • Violence and terrorism is the problem, linked with Cocaine smuggling.

Legalization of cannabis is a different topic, two different issues.

The c.i.a. must stop terrorizing Mexico and then debate about possible legalization and decriminalization of certain substances.

  • Bring back alcohol prohibition now!

  • Hey Juan. You sound just like every other person I hear arguing for a status quo that is clearly broken. It has cost Mexico 40 or 50 thousand lives in a war with the cartels to capture what? 2 or 3 high level cartel managers. And you don't think others will reappear in their place. There is no proof WHATSOEVER that legalization increases the use drugs. There is however proof that they can be regulated, taxed, and made somewhat safer. Example controlled alcohol content in liquor vs. moonshine.

  • Are you joking? This isnt a question of "intelligent arguments" or some "sophisticated" person deciding something stupid. ........ to think that Obama, Calderon or any of these people dont know that there is MONEY TO BE LOST from legalizing drugs is beyond naive. Why dont you get a fucking doctor to testify in public about the real health implications of these substances? Not some politician , I mean a real physician.

This is GENOCIDE and you are participating with this bullshit.
