Cold starting my Focus TDCI .
From a temperature range of 0 to +5º Celsius the car fires and stalls.
To show you the problem I have done a cold start at the temperature range the car is worst at, and to aggravate the fault, not waited for glow plugs.
Car is a 2003 on original battery, new glow plugs, fuel filter with 112K Miles on the clock. New Cam sensor fitted 3 years ago. EGR is bypassed.

  • GET DIESEL THAT MIGHT HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @012345678964291 Oh yeah lol

  • why do people abuse diesel engines? u must always wait for the glow plug ight to go out - this is the preheating function. Not observing this will result in poor starting. On a cold day the light will take a while to go out. Then start the engine. Only a dummy starts a diesel on a cold morning without waiting for that light to go out. Simple. Problem solved.

  • @MILLARD331 Yes on a conventional system. It makes bugger all difference if you wait for the glow light to go out, in fact the plugs continue to be heated some 5 seconds after the light goes out. Therefore problem not solved.

  • @pirkeserbia I didn't! Replace the glow plugs wait until the light goes out, count to 2 and crank. Keep the key in the crank position, the ecu will kill the starter as soon as the engine is running correctly.

I think as one person said here, the injectors are worn, but good glow plugs are still important despite others saying the do not aid cold start, THEY DO.

And in reply to your "Greetings man", hang loose bro!

  • @simonspiers Greetings man, i have the same problem with my Focus, on cold start in the morning it starts as yours on this video, but during the day starts perfectly. I am always waiting for glow plugs to turn off, and then start. Over the night it gets cold, and in the morning the same story again. How did you resolve the problem?

  • @MILLARD331

Totally agree, have a 1.8TDCi, 80K miles, original Glo Plugs, all I do is turn Key, Wait for glo light to go out, about 1-2 seconds at 2Deg C, hold foot on Clutch, Hold Foot on accelerator, and it always starts.

  • I wish that we could get good diesel cars here in the U.S. No Ford Focus diesels here. The oil companies campaign to keep us from having cars that get really good gas mileage. Diesels get better than others. The diesel VW Jetti TDI is about the best deal and it is not inexpensive.

  • @whiteowlwhiteowl

Spot on. Mine had same problem and was transformed with new starter motor.

  • @urbex2007. blanking off egr stops the carbon clogging up the inlet manifold and the tdci is direct injection and the glow plugs are there to clean up cold start emmisions.. and not any guesswork either. i work in a ford garage so know these engines pretty well and egr valves are a bad design on these(check etis if u dont beleive me)
