There appears to be serious misconceptions about who is paying for what and why. First folks... this is public land. The land belongs to all Americans and the resource is managed for the "public good." That is where FLPMA and the term "multiple use" comes from.
WE do not have a "full cost recovery system" on public land. Meaning the permittees do not cover the cost of the of the permit (assessments, range repair, data collection).

We have extractive industries that take a disproportionate amount of wealth out of public land (enough to wipe out the National debt) and pay very little for the privilege.
When we are talking about wild horses we have a great distraction from the truth of public land management.

In 1971 the wild free-roaming horse and burro Act was passed by both houses of Congress without a single dissenting vote (do you understand that both houses, all parties agreed that this was important to the welfare of the American public).

Instead of creating a system of managing horses as a stable "wild" population (as outlined by law) the "feral livestock" mindset (the exact mindset the law was put into place to curtail) simply created a system of profiteers that consisted of many of the same individuals that profited from "mustanging."

That is exactly what has lead to the current crisis.
Who pays for all of this? YOU do. Not only do you pay for it but you are getting stuck with a "welfare" tab to support a small handful of profiteers. YOU pay for the mismanagement of the horses and YOU pay for the livestock and extractive industry and are not properly reimbursed... while your economy goes into the tank.

The horses exist on a small fraction of land as a scapegoat for those that do not want the an honest conversation to occur.

  • its not fair that they hav 2 suffer and b treated like this just let them live there life and natuarly die not shoot them or drive them 2 the slaughter house

  • After watching the overpopulation of wild horses in Nevada - most of you don't have a clue that horses all but starve until they started to be rounded up. Interestingly enough the answer isn't gelded the stallions AND letting the horses be free and wild because now you just selectively geld a stallion who is a stallion of a herd because he is strong and has all the characteristics of what make a "wild horse." By gelding that horse you just changed the genetics of a wild horse for the future -

  • There's not enough spaces for the horses to eat. They are starving because greedy landowners need the land for cattle. Even IF that wasn't the issue, it is inhuman to make them go through a chute so narrow and to stuff them so tight. That's like the slaughter trucks they put the horses in. They're getting injuring and panicking not only because they're caught, but because it's so crowded in there they can't move and need to run. It is absolutely appalling and cruel.

  • No trust passing means no trust passing unless you have something in wrighting from the courts. I think we should find a better way to bring the horse's in my good god are cows get better treatment then that... #2

  • I come from a ranch family of 15,000 head of cows and last winter we watched blm round up the horse's off are land that was marked no trust passing. for the extra money that was sitting one are land really what ever happen to all the pritty horse's and why is it called the wild west now there is nothing wild about it anymore. but i will say that was the last time that blm would ever take anything of are land again..

  • At least look after them ffs!!:'(

  • @angharadconcannon

if they are left outside were they live they will end up destroying farmers land an eventually starving. like rodeoismyname said, they will over populate their space...

  • I can assure you that the BLM gives all sick and injured horses the best medical care they can. There is a vet on staff just for these occasions.

  • It is our life and how we make are living. So think about it!!!

  • Wow I dont think that many people understand where half of there food, not just for them but how bout those dog lovers? what do you think most of your dog food is made out of? Plus all you guys look at is the bad in everything people do you never look at the good. Does that say something about you? I think it does. You focus on your selfs and bad more than you do others and good. Why dont you think about us who horses, cattle, live stock in general, famers, and last but not least rancher.

  • Nasty stuff.
