you might try an insultion supply store.a flat piece of armaflex would be thicker and more comfortable as a knee pad.thats what i use and its great,and cheap.just a couple bucks.
Suluk46 has a padded frame sheet.
I think it is firm Plastazote.

I put thin white cutting board from WalMart in the back of mine and still put the pad part to my back!

I use to have the british Army Patrol pace...it was one main compartment and two side compartments....
After using it a few times...I sold it. Thats the thing about packs....
as we are all different...we all like different things.
I like the look and set-up of this one. Reminds me of the Aussie ALICE pack.
