In 1814, Francis Scott Key wrote new words for the then popular drinking song, "To Anacreon in Heaven"

He wrote the new lyrics in order to celebrate America's emancipation from the British Empire. However, after more than 20 years of legislative debate, in the year 1931,
was a law finally signed proclaiming "The Star Spangled Banner" to be the national anthem of the United States of America.
During that 20 year period, as many as forty bills and resolutions, were heatedly debated in Congress.
