In 2008 KIDS interactive GmbH was commissioned by KLETT educational publishers to develop an interactive wall map of Germany, Europe and the world to be used by geography teachers on interactive whiteboards.

The software allows the user to choose between a physical and political map. And teachers can either tailor the map to meet their own needs or integrate a range of set tasks, worksheets and maps into their geography classes. The physical map comes with different user tools. With the zoom function it is possible to to scale the map to whatever size required and from there, the user can drag the map across the whiteboard to find the desired location. A navigator makes sure that users always knows where they are, even on a magnified map. The maps have a legend window, which the teacher can fade in to explain the relevant cartographic symbols. And a magnification function ensures that the legend is also easily visible in larger classrooms so teachers can focus on particular symbols or fields of colour such as are used to denote varying altitude. The drawing tool which is integrated into the software works with all interactive whiteboards, regardless of manufacturer.

Teachers and pupils can use different colours and line thickness to draw and write directly onto the map. The users markings are incorporated into the map and are subsequently scaled and moved about with the rest of the map. A screenshot function allows the user to save a section of a map with their own markings on it. These screenshots can then be integrated into worksheets, printed out or emailed to pupils.

The innovative whiteboard software also enables teachers to load worksheet maps. By selecting individual elements, teachers can create tailor-made maps. All they have to do is to select the elements they want featured and wait for them to load. A few moments later, they have a customized map to work with. With such functions the interactive wall map provides teachers with many new ways to quickly create their own maps for use in class and thereby impart knowledge to contemporary pupils in a highly graphic way. The same functions are also available on the interactive political map and can be combined as required.

Both from here or via the main menu, the user can access a range of set tasks included in the software. These integrated tasks give pupils a chance to test their knowledge interactively in the classroom. They might, for example, use the drag and drop function to match names to islands on the map. Just one click checks the answers and corrects any that the pupils might have got wrong.

A library gives teachers the opportunity to continually generate new tasks. For example, they might choose to create a game in which pupils have to match countries with the correct flags.

The intuitive handling of this whiteboard software and the self-explanatory functionality make it easy for teachers to use the interactive whiteboard as a modern teaching and learning resource and to make teaching of the future an interactive experience.
