I recently was able to hold a beaded lizard for a little bit! I was at the Serpentarium ( http://www.snakemuseum.com/ ) and my buddy, the owner Robert, was ever so kind enough to let me hold a large specimen!
This is one of two seriously venomous lizards. It's near cousin (and congener), the Gila Monster, is the
other. The bite is not likely to kill a human but they are very painful and could possibly have long term complications. The beaded achieves a greater size but is not as colorfully marked as the gila. The gila is highly protected and the beaded is on its way... but for the time being, no special permit is required to keep them in California.
I believe the genus name "Heloderma" means "sun skin" but i am not positive. If it was "helioderma" i
would be much more confidant.
Thanks, Robert!
I am SO bummed the sound got messed up. I said one stupid bad word and had to edit it out. Thanks for nothing Windows Moviemaker!
