Skype on the iPhone through EDGE (or 3G) Data Network

So Skype was released on the iPhone on March 31, 2009, but it is restricted to wifi use only. However, it can be modified to run on the Edge and 3G data networks when wifi isn't available. This is useful so you can Skype anywhere there is data service. This video demonstrates running Skype on the Edge network on a first generation iPhone. Unfortunately, if you have a GPRS data network it is too slow to handle VoIP.

To do this, you will need a jailbroken iPhone and the MobileSubstrate updated to the latest version so that VoIPover3G can be downloaded and used. After VoIPover3G is installed, modify the VoIPover3G.plist to include com.skype.skype and then download the Skype application and you will be able to use it over your carrier's wireless EDGE or 3G data network.

i have a question. If you have this and you dont have a unlimited data plan and you still use the edge network will it charge you? Because i heard that it tricks the phone to think that its using wifi instead of edge.

You still need a data plan. It only fools the app, not the phone service.

can't find voipover3G while SSHing into iphone. Also when adding to plist, am I adding the text exactly as you've indicated above, "com.skype.skype"

yah, because the EDGE is a new way of technology its not the best, its probably slowing down from working to see where the nearest tower is...

Question - I've got it working over 3G/Edge but while driving & talking the call quality is very distorted & fades, is this normal when in motion... is it intended & only possible over 3G/Edge when stationary? Sorry, I'm not very technical when it comes to this data stuff & don't know if the connection picks up slower when moving at normal vehicular speeds.
