  • thats true, bach music herself proves that music is beyond instrumental relevance ........

  • Pretty sure Bach composed on a Casio Vl-Tone...

  • To all these people wondering, whether or not Bach used an instrument while composing, I can tell the answer. Of course not! Music composed with an instrument is usually playable with that instrument and a few others. Well, I've heard Bach sound very good indeed on steel drums, accordions, and electronic instruments, none of which existed in his day. Singing Bach's instrumental works a capella has also been done with great success. It's pure music, straight from the source.

  • @gr0mithtimon He certainly could have, but it would be much faster to compose with an instrument, and besides, much of his work goes through many revisions, I'm sure he played it. And if so, the harpsichord would be the most convenient.

  • @AEFic

I doubt he needed an instrument to compose. Much of his music is impossible to play for a single person, no matter what the instrument. If he used any instrument, it would probably be a clavichord.

  • @KuzniaHarada

I was actually fortunate enough to play a harpsichord today- I walked into a practice room and it was just sitting there! It was so much fun! I, of course, had to play some Bach on it, though I'm not much of a keyboard player. But I really prefer the action of the harpsichord to the piano, it actually feels easier on my fingers.

  • @AEFic

Yes, it's possible, but in 100% we don't know it. We can ask Bach 100 years later:D

  • @KuzniaHarada

Well, he likely composed on the harpsichord, I think. They were smaller, and didn't require someone to work the bellows, so he could have done it in his house, for instance. Also, as you know, it has a keyboard, like the organ, so he'd be able to write for multiple voices.

  • ermm, die kunst der fuge wasn't composed by organ. The musicologist don't know on what instrument it was composed, but Bach was interested how to play it in harpischord. Hovewer, it's played on organ because it was the most liked Bach's instrument.
