VanMoerkerke is chopping off his head locks for breast cancer research
OSHAWA, Ont. - As the UOIT men's hockey team hosts their 2010 home opener on Saturday, Ridgebacks freshman Luke VanMoerkerke will be making his home debut with the longest hair on the team. Come November 1st, he will have the shortest hair on the team as he is shaving his head for breast cancer research.
VanMoerkerke has been growing his hair for 14 months and it is now over 16 inches long. His goal is to raise over $7,000, in honour of his godmother who is currently going through treatments for breast cancer.
The month October is being celebrated as the Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which aims at raising awareness about the disease that is affecting a number of women across the globe.
The freshman left-winger is collecting donations through the Canadian Cancer Society website.

The Ridgebacks are also collecting money at all home games in October (schedule below). Luke will be shaving his head at November 1st on campus (location and time - tba).
Every pledge takes us one step further in the fight against cancer. Online pledging is secure and it saves the Canadian Cancer Society money by reducing administrative costs.
The picture at the end is priceless. Great job!
