This is BMW 330Ci E46 RPS = Rollover Protection System is to prevent rear seat passenger being crush during rollover even when the convertible top is in the close position for the needed strength to hold the car up while it is upside down.
i have a 99 bmw vert .. and mine are behind my seats .. when the top is down .. and if u hit a huge pot hole .. they pop up to prevent the car from rolling

id say some kind of gyro system to detect when the car is at an angle that its not sapposed to be at.

The Z4 has fixed roll bars. They're the nice looking bars you see behind the seats.
But yeah, the other convertibles have the deploying roll bars.

Iunno how they did it, but when you're driving along and the car detects that the wheels have left the ground, the roll bars deploy
