"Nonesuch" is a traditional English Polka (2/4 time) which can be found in Playford's "Dancing Master" (1651).

Nonesuch was a hunting lodge which built in 1538 by Henry VIII over where the demolished village of Cuddington once stood, near Epsom Wells in Sussex. At the very end of her life, Elizabeth I visited Nonesuch, as a guest of Lord Lumley, son-in-law of the Earl of Arundel, and it was reported that "there is much dancing of country dances in the privy chamber at Nonesuch, before the Queen's majesty, who is exceedingly pleased therewith".

There were also some lyrics that accompanied this tune;

"And she shall bring the birds in spring
And dance among the flowers.
In summer's heat her kisses sweet
They fall from leafy bowers.

She cuts the grain and harvests corn.
The kiss of fall surrounds her.
The days grow old and winter cold.
She draws her cloak around her."

  • Mendlesham session is mainly tunes and mainly Celtic but no hard and fast rules really. It's very much a join in Celtic type of session rather than everyone taking it in turn to do their thing. Don't know how to send private emails through Youtube but if you do, drop me an email and I'll come back to you. Cheers

  • @twangalot sounds good, I know quite a few Irish, Ulster and Scots tunes. Also play a bit of tin whistle. I'll message you.
