Max Rostal (August 7, 1906 - August 6, 1991) is a very underestimated violin player. Although his Lp's cost a small fortune, Universal has not re-issed his recordings on cd. Enjoy his very individual playing!!

This is the first movement, the secord movement can be heard at:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UgKBERw2foc
The third movement can be heard at:

I de-clicked and eq-ed the record myself.
For three years I have a website, where I post "out-of-copyright" (in the Netherlands)
classical lp's and 78rpm's. It is updated every Friday:

Enjoy!

  • Absolutely, he IS (or rather WAS) very much underestimated. Got a rare CD of his early recordings where he plays the Tartini violin concerto (a surprisingly hard piece...), Beethvoven Romance, The Devil's Trills by Tartini etc. Amazing playing.

  • Thanks for the comment... There are a couple of Rostal LP's on the European Archive. Also from his brother Leo.

    greetings, rolf

  • Very nice...good work between the violin and piano

  • this is really a performance of Beethoven Violin sonata in a serious way, without too much artificial expression. Great for posting! thanks!

  • Rolf! Thanks for posting this and yes, I do. This is the first time I've heard(thanks to you)Rostal playing.Very fresh, intelligent, good phrasing, true to the text, recognizable sound. One have to listen much more to form an opinion of an artist, but I had a great pleasure today. Thank you so much! Vladimir.
